CAMTB 2025 Board Recruitment

It is time to grow and expand the CAMTB board and build towards the future!

CAMTB seeks to expand board leadership and increase diversity in representation – in multiple dimensions. With this expansion, we intend to organize strategic committees and working groups to accomplish a set of focused tasks each year that will further our collective mission.  Committees and Working Groups will convene as needed and play a critical role in setting the strategic direction of the organization. As such, we recognize the importance of cultivating a group of leaders with varied skill sets and perspectives.

Basic Details

Current CAMTB Bylaws state:
“The Board shall consist of at least five (5) but no more than eleven (11) directors unless changed by amendment of the Bylaws.”

Half are elected each year to a two-year term. Board members and officers are elected annually, though there are provisions for mid-term changes as well as unexpected or intentional variations. The CAMTB board is self-nominating. There is no ‘member’ vote, the organization has no voting members.

Current Board Resolution

The CAMTB Board has resolved that the Advisory Committee (which in turn has members from each of our member organizations, as well as the elected board members themselves) would effectively provide a nominating committee from their ranks. We also believe that many board member candidates can be sourced from the Advisory Committee.

Board Requirements

Members of the CAMTB Board of Directors (BoD) are expected to join at least six monthly board meetings per year (out of 12 regularly scheduled meetings) normally via teleconference, but also occasionally in person. The Executive Committee of the BoD will meet more regularly in order to conduct the day-to-day business of the corporation with members of staff. See additional Roles & Responsibilities below.

Recruitment

We are seeking a diverse mix of passionate individuals (mountain bikers preferred!) who can help us build a board with the strategic skill set that will help CAMTB achieve its “5 Whys” (see below). These skills include, but are not limited to:

  • Fundraising and finance
  • Understanding of the legislative process
  • Lobbying and political engagement
  • Partnership and coalition development
  • Land management/use and environmental review processes (CEQA, NEPA)
  • Trail planning/mapping and building experience
  • Law/Science/Environmental degree
  • Non-profit management experience
  • Marketing and public relations

In alignment with our commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, CAMTB is committed to cultivating a Board of Directors with diverse representation, and year over year increase in gender, racial diversity, and geographic representation.

Our CAMTB “5 Whys”

  1. Provide a unifying, statewide platform for mountain bikers.
  2. Proactively engage State, Regional and Federal agencies to further the CAMTB Mission while cultivating strong partnership opportunities.
  3. Track legislation and planning efforts that affect trail access in California and create actionable recommendations and in time draft legislation to expand bike-friendly trail mileage.
  4. Create a collaborative place for our members to share their insights, knowledge base, and resources.
  5. Shift the public perception of mountain biking such that we are known for as hard-working, fun-loving, and considerate stewards of the trail.

CAMTB Board Member Goals – How do we effectuate the “5 Whys”?

  1. Create an environment for trail-based organization leadership from across the State of California to collaborate and work together in order to further our common goals.
  2. Seek to improve riding opportunities near communities and increase accessibility to all communities regardless of socioeconomic conditions.
  3. Increase awareness of mountain biking and trail issues in California through interaction with legislators, land managers, lobbyists, other trail user groups, bicycle clubs as well as the public.
  4. Assist member organizations in their efforts to educate users on sustainable trail development, trail courtesy, and safety.
  5. Represent CAMTB interests in public forums and with recreation land managers, advocating improved and equitable trail access.
  6. Assist organizations in their efforts towards building new trails and in the maintenance of existing trails.
  7. Develop a statewide vision of high-quality and diverse riding opportunities for the mountain biking community in California.
  8. Create active, engaged communities of riders statewide who are willing to donate, volunteer, and support CAMTB’s mission as well as help support all our member organizations.
  9. To develop a broad and sustainable funding model that ensures the long-term viability of the organization, and also seeks to improve models and conditions for our member organizations.

  • Active in the trail community, and supportive of the mountain bike community

Application Process

Prospective CAMTB Board Members are encouraged to self-nominate by submitting an application to the nomination form.

Advisory Council members are encouraged to apply and recommend that others apply. AC members may send a proposed nomination to the AC Chair (Rob Pettersen)  or Board President (Steve Messer), who will reach out and encourage the potential member to apply.

The recruitment process in 2024 will run from October 1 to December 31, with the goal to have a slate of board and officer nominees for a vote at the January annual board meeting. However, there are provisions for joining the board at a later date if that timing is too fast for some.

A Board of Directors working group will review all applications. The group will report their recommendation to the board on December 17th. The board will vote on adding new members, using the advice of the working group at the January annual meeting.
