Action Alert: Revised Public Lands Sale Provision
Stop the Senate’s Revised Plan to Sell Off Public Lands
Senator Mike Lee of Utah just introduced a revised public lands sale provision. This time, it targets BLM lands near communities across the West, including significant portions of California.
Take Two
Thanks to you, Lee’s previous attempt to force the sale of 3.3 million acres was rejected earlier this week, following a widespread public outcry. He’s back, however, with a plan to mandate the sale of up to 1.2 million acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, targeting areas within 5 miles of population centers. This puts many valuable natural, cultural, and recreational resources in the crosshairs.
Resources at Risk
Early analysis from our national advocacy partners, Outdoor Alliance, shows a significant overlap between recreation areas and lands that could be sold. From hiking trails to climbing crags, from mountain bike routes to rivers, many of the places we love are still at risk.
For example, in Redding, California, one of the largest population centers in the north, 33 miles of trail exist on lands described in the current provision. Those 33 miles connect visitors to hundreds of miles of trail on BLM land beyond the 5-mile provision, effectively compromising the system if those lands are sold.
The larger outdoor and conservation community repeatedly demonstrated that public land sales are a losing proposition. Senator Lee just won’t take no for an answer. It is time to raise our voices again.
Tell your Senators and Congresspersons to reject the revised public lands sale provision. Public lands should be managed for the benefit of people, not sold off to private interests.
