California Trails Conservancy Program Comes to Life in SB 287
Senator Arreguin demonstrates leadership in authoring visionary legislation, which addresses longstanding gaps in coordination and funding across federal, state, and local jurisdictions. SB 287: California Trails Conservancy Program lays the groundwork for a more unified and effective approach to trail development, management, and stewardship statewide.
A New Resource for the Trails Community
Spearheaded by CAMTB’s sister advocacy organization, California Trails Foundation, our diverse coalition represents trail users, advocates, and stewards from every corner of the state—urban and rural, coastal and inland, Sierra to desert. We include hikers, cyclists, runners, equestrians, conservationists, and multi-modal mobility advocates, all united by a shared commitment to expanding access to California’s public lands and trail systems.
The California Trail Conservancy Program envisioned by SB 287 will:
- Promote the development of environmentally sound trail networks and greenways;
- Expand equitable access to trails and nature-based recreation for all Californians;
- Support policies and funding strategies that strengthen current and future trail systems;
- Encourage collaboration across land management agencies and organizations to address emerging trends in trail use and improve connectivity between natural and built environments—especially in underserved areas.
Importantly, SB 287 calls for a broad, inclusive working group under the California Natural Resources Agency to guide this effort. We are confident that this coalition already exists—represented by many of the organizations signed below—and will continue to grow with the bill’s adoption.
Together, we can build a more connected, resilient, and equitable trail future for California.
